It was nice while it lasted, but – deep down – we all knew that the new kind and gentle Doug Ford was too good to be true.* The new Doug was quite non-partisan, working closely with the federal Liberals, praising the deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, and paying tribute to retiring provincial Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne. He deferred to experts, especially in the public health field, and provided calm and reassuring daily TV messages as the COVID crisis dragged on.

I wonder how future historians will explain the collective insanity that has increasingly characterized the first two decades of the 20th century. We have available an unprecedented amount of information, much of it at our fingertips for those who have access to the Internet. But the Internet is – or, more accurately, those who use the Internet are – the chief cause of the growing stupidity of the populace.
