In less than two years, the upper tier government in Peel Region will be abolished, according to a recent announcement from the Ford Government. When Peel Region was established in 1974, it was on the basis of a detailed study, with public hearings, and briefs from interested parties. This combination of research and public consultation was followed with all of the regional governments created a half century ago. The Hamilton-Burlington-Wentworth Local Government Review, for example, received 58 submissions, as I verified from my copy of its Report and Recommendations, November 1969. I had become Research Officer for this Review in late 1968.
