The resignation of Governor General Julie Payette has triggered wide-ranging reactions. Some seem very worried about the lack of a Governor General during these unsettled times and with a possible federal election in the coming months. Others claim that the resignation provides an opportunity to sever an unwelcome link to Britain and our colonial past. The old Professor in me feels it is time for a refresher on the role and relevance of the position of Governor General.

The title, of course, is derived from “Elvis Has Left the Building,” an announcement often made at the end of Elvis Presley concerts to disperse crowds who were lingering and hoping for encores. Donald Trump did, indeed, leave the White House early in the morning on January 20, well before the inauguration of Joe Biden as the new President. But many of his devoted fans continue to insist that he won the election and to support an encore from him.
A recent email from the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) announcing a January 8 deadline for registration in the correspondence course version of its various education and training programs took me on a trip down memory lane extending over almost 60 years.
